"It is not
for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings
to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Lest they drink, and forget the law, and
pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."
- Proverbs
31:4-5
Addiction
to drugs and alcohol separates alcoholics
and addicts from other people, from their
own spirituality, and from God. Spiritual
pain is often a motivating factor in abuse
and addiction. Abuse and addiction becomes
a temporary solution, but ultimately makes
the spiritual malady worse. An addicted
person begins to seek out more and more
of their drug or drugs of choice, furthering
their own spiritual sickness and by seeking
out a quick fix, gradually and progressively
worsening the problem. Denial, selfishness,
and gluttony become not just an occasional
lapse but a way of life which will continue
to progress if help is not sought.
The power of Jesus Christ can break the
cycle of using and abusing alcohol and other
drugs and put an end to destructive behavior,
regret and shame, and the continued compulsion
to become intoxicated despite worsening
consequences. God can help those who suffer
from chemical addiction to reconnect, in
Christ, to families, friends, coworkers,
and loved ones, and to live freely and happily
without any need to return to destructive
behavior.
In
other words, addiction and hopelessness
needn't be the condition of alcoholics and
addicts. We believe that intervention and
subsequent treatment can remove the barriers
to getting healthy. A Christian intervention
can allow addicts and alcoholics to renew
and strengthen their relationship to God
and in doing so, begin a lasting recovery.
A Christian in recovery no longer feels
the need for secrecy, no longer lives in
shame, no longer must lie and cheat and
steal to feed addiction.
Drug and alcohol addiction is more powerful
than we are, but Jesus holds power over
all if we ask for His help. For a Christian
in recovery, the love of God replaces the
sickness. Through Christian therapy and
continued renewal of a commitment to a Christian
life, the recovering person begins to return
to happiness and good health.
